Book Publishing has changed beyond recognition over the past decade as the number of self-publishing platforms like Amazon and Apple Books has increased. This means that, in theory, anybody can become their own publisher. We look at book publishing in these posts and some of the books we have helped publish for local authors.
Amazon's Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) has been a game-changer for the publishing industry. It is no longer a necessity to have a mainstream publisher to help you edit, typeset and publish your books. KDP has enables any author to self-publish their books in eBook, paperback or hardback formats in a print-on-demand format.
Indeed, the whole element of financial risk in publishing has disappeared, if you go down the KDP route, as there is no need to hold stock of a book, thus eliminating the gamble of whether it will sell well, or not. Let's look at some of the books we have published and how one can go about publishing books yourself.
What Is Book Publishing?
Book publishing is the process of making a book available to the public, either for sale or for free. Traditionally, there have been several types of niche publishers, including trade book publishers, textbook or academic publishers, as well as mainstream publishers. Self-publishers have now been added to the list of types of publisher.
What Does A Book Publisher Do?
Book publishing usually covers several different disciplines, all done by the same business (or person, in the world of the self-publisher). With the book's manuscript ready for the publication process, the copy will need to be edited for errors and factual correctness. Its layout, typesetting and cover will be configured and designed to provide the look the author wants, before the book is ready to be released.The final steps in the self-publication process are to provide ISBN numbers to the versions of the books, to upload the manuscript and cover files to the publishing platform, setting the book's price in the various marketplaces and to submit the details of the book to Neilsen for cataloguing.
